Unlike anywhere else in the world, Nelson’s Dockyard is an 18th-century naval base still alive with activity today. Once the Caribbean stronghold of the Royal Navy and home to a young Horatio Nelson, it safeguarded Britain’s trade routes for decades. Now beautifully restored and UNESCO-listed, it remains the cultural and social heart of English Harbour – history you don’t just see, but feel.
From Dockyard to Boutique Hotel
When the Navy left in 1889, the Dockyard’s stone buildings fell silent and slowly crumbled. In 1951, the Friends of English Harbour began a careful, decades-long restoration, breathing new life into its historic walls. Out of this revival grew Admiral’s Inn & Gunpowder Suites – a collection of restored heritage buildings and contemporary cottages, including the former Pitch & Tar Store, Engineers’ Offices, Naval Hospital, Joiner’s Loft, and Gunpowder Magazine. Today, travellers sleep within history itself, surrounded by gardens, the sea, and Antigua’s enduring spirit.
Meet Your Hosts
For over 60 years, the Deeth family has been woven into English Harbour’s fabric. When Peter and Ann Deeth arrived in 1960, they helped pioneer Antigua’s hospitality scene. Today, their children Paul and Astrid – both raised sailing these waters – continue that legacy of gracious hosting. Their deep island roots and passion for sharing Antigua’s authentic charm ensure every guest experiences the warmth and genuine hospitality that has made Admiral’s Inn & Gunpowder Suites a beloved Caribbean sanctuary.
